Francis Fine Wines are an independent wine wholesaler and shipper with over 25 years experience in the trade. Having worked for the Cognac House Remy Martin, Matt Francis decided to use his experience in a more local capacity and start his own wine company ‘Francis Fine Wines’.
This is a young, vibrant and progressive wine company that only supplies independent bars, hotels and restaurants and has a plethora of own labels not found in bland chains and supermarkets.
We hope you enjoy our selection of wines that have been lovingly chosen over an extensive tasting period by Matt and his team. Each month, Matt will be focussing on one brand of wine, giving you insight into the tasting notes. If what you read takes your fancy, then why not order a bottle (or two) next time you book a table at North Bar & Kitchen!
We’re kicking off with a couple of great bottles from Amigos…
2011 Amigos Red – Shiraz Grenache Mataro
A rustic blend of raspberry confection and red strap liquorice over complex earthy notes of dark chocolate, terracotta and fragrant black pepper. A medium body reveals juicy redskin fruits and Jaffa framed by liquorice and ground sweet spices. Velvety tannins and sweet blood orange acidity converge for a long and smooth finish.
The Red Amigos are sourced from the Rocky Road Vineyard in the southern part of the Margaret River region which has a strong influence from the Southern Ocean. The vines have their roots in gravel loams derived from granite. These free draining moderately fertile soils facilitate growth without excessive vigour and allow perfect ripening. Vines are grown on a single bilateral cordon with a vertically trained canopy – a simple and practical format that maximises light penetration and maintains a balanced vine.
2010 Amigos White – Marsanne Chardonnay Roussanne
At first, an intriguing mix of lifted stone fruits, dried flowers and mineral driven notes are found. Delving deeper reveals luscious aromas of citrus, quince and white nectarines with underlying lanolin and wet slate. A dry textured palate contains layers of ripe stone fruits, figs and glazed pineapple balanced by savoury apricot kernel and ocean spray nuances. Dried lavender and rosemary emerge on a back palate that is bound together with ripe Meyer lemon acidity.
Primary constituent in the blend is Marsanne, grown on the family vineyards in the southern part of the Margaret River region which has a strong influence from the Southern Ocean.
